Start a conversation about inclusive language!

In the lead up to Wear it Purple Day, we have released a toolbox talk that you can use with your team on site or in the office. The talk focuses on inclusive language, which is a great place to start a conversation about LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Inclusive language is not about policing what we say or being politically correct. It’s about using language that is accurate, respectful and doesn’t cause people harm.

Language is powerful. How we use it can greatly impact how included – or excluded – people feel in the workplace. There are things we can all do to move the workplace towards one where inclusion is just the norm, starting with the language we use.

The toolbox talk includes topics and exercises that you can pick and choose from depending on what resonates with you and your team. You may want to follow up with your team to see what they have thought about and observed in the weeks that follow.

We understand that for many organisations this is a new and daunting topic. We’re holding a briefing session for managers to familiarise you with the content of the toolbox talk and answer any questions you have. This session will take place online at 2pm on 20th August.

Remember, it’s ok if you don’t have all the answers. Starting a conversation is exactly that – a start. Talking about language and inclusion openly and honestly brings everyone on the journey and helps us learn together!
