Celebrate Wear it Purple Day!

August 27 is Wear it Purple Day! Are you ready to start a conversation about LQBTQ+ inclusion?

Wear it Purple is a youth-led organisation striving to foster supportive, safe, empowering, and inclusive environments for rainbow young people. Many organisations in Australia use Wear it Purple Day as an opportunity to talk about LGBTQ+ inclusion.

This year the theme is ‘Start the conversation… Keep it going!’

Starting the conversation

To support this year’s theme and our peers in property and construction, we’re working on tools to help you start conversations… and keep them going!

Toolbox talks will soon be available for you to use with your teams. The talks focus on the use of inclusive language, which is a great place to start a discussion about LGBTQ+ inclusion.

In the week before Wear it Purple Day we will be holding a briefing session to prepare you for using the toolbox talks and to answer any questions you may have – stay tuned for details.

Do you have useful resources that you use in your organisation? We’d love to see them! Share them with us at info@interbuild.online.

Supporting rainbow youth for parents and allies

On Thursday, 2 September we will be holding a virtual panel event to explore how we, as allies and as parents, can support our rainbow youth. Registration opens soon!

Celebrating Wear it Purple Day

We’ve put together some ideas for how Wear it Purple Day can be celebrated in the workplace – as a team, a site, or a whole organisation.

How you celebrate is limited only by your creativity! Whether you’re able to gather together or are working from home, the possibilities are endless!

  • Wear (it) purple!

  • Launch your pride network (or your D&I committee)

  • Host a morning tea

  • Hold a bake sale – purple cup cakes, anyone?

  • Run a quiz night – online or in person

  • Have a silent auction – and donate the proceeds to an LGBTQ+ youth organisation

  • Bring in a third-party speaker: an out leader, a drag queen, a local celeb, a sporting hero, a gay tradie

  • Put on a night of short films

  • Share organisation-wide communications – what is Wear it Purple Day and why is it important?

  • Organise a team talk or presentation

  • Celebrate your people

  • Send rainbow laces or purple wristbands to your construction sites

  • Have a sausage sizzle / BBQ

  • Share your support on social media

  • Make a donation to an LGBTQ+ charity or organsisation

  • Turn your organisation's logo purple on your website/LinkedIn

  • Create a video your people / share their vox pops

  • Discuss mental health awareness

  • Encourage your people to show their support by pledging to be an Ally

  • Encourage people to Start a Conversation… and Keep it Going!
